Alcuni dischi non si limitano a suonare ma riaccendono un ricordo collettivo, fanno rivivere un’energia che pensavamo perduta. È il caso di Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’), il nuovo live della Tedeschi Trucks Band che rende omaggio, a più di cinquant’anni di distanza, al leggendario tour di Joe Cocker e LeonRussell.

Registrato nel 2015 al LOCKN’ Festival in Virginia, e finalmente pubblicato (nel mese di settembre), da Fantasy Records, questo concerto è un’esplosione di musica e passione. Derek Trucks e SusanTedeschi, coppia nella vita e sul palco, guidano un ensemble di talenti per una celebrazione che travalica i confini del tributo. Qui non si “replica” nulla: si respira lo stesso spirito libero e collettivo che animava i Mad Dogs originali.

Sul palco, insieme ai due leader, compaiono alcuni nomi che hanno fatto la storia: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Chris Stainton. E poi una sfilata di ospiti d’eccezione: Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Robinson dei Black Crowes, Dave Mason dei Traffic, Warren Haynes, Anders Osborne, Pamela Polland, John Bell. A chiudere il cerchio, nel mix originale del 2015, c’era Leon Russell stesso, il grande architetto del tour del ’70 — quasi a voler benedire l’operazione prima di andarsene.

Fin dalle prime note di “The Letter”, è chiaro che non si tratta di un semplice revival: la voce di Susan Tedeschi è una forza della natura, e la band si muove con l’energia di una comunità musicale che suona per pura gioia. Seguono momenti toccanti come “Darling Be Home Soon” (di John Sebastian, resa celebre da Cocker) e l’emozionante “Bird on the Wire”, con una Rita Coolidge in stato di grazia.

Tra i momenti da segnare in rosso: Warren Haynes infiamma la platea con “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” dei Beatles, mentre Chris Robinson si prende la scena in “Sticks and Stones” e duetta con Susan Tedeschi in una strepitosa “Space Captain”. Quando arrivano “Feelin’ Alright”, “With a Little Help from My Friends” e “The Weight”, è pura catarsi collettiva: il pubblico, la band, gli ospiti — tutti uniti in un abbraccio sonoro che sa di gratitudine e libertà.

Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited è più di un disco live: è un atto d’amore verso la musica che unisce, un ponte tra generazioni e un promemoria del potere che ha la condivisione sul palco. Derek Trucks e Susan Tedeschi non si limitano a guardare indietro — portano avanti una tradizione di onestà musicale, con il cuore sempre acceso.

Un album da ascoltare a volume alto, preferibilmente con gli amici, ricordando che la vera magia del rock è fatta di comunità e passione.

Some records don't just play music, they rekindle a collective memory, reviving an energy we thought was lost. This is the case with Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN'),the new live album by the Tedeschi Trucks Band, which pays tribute, more than fifty years later,to the legendary Joe Cocker and Leon Russell tour.

Recorded in 2015 at the LOCKN' Festival in Virginia, and finally released (in September) by Fantasy Records, this concert is an explosion of music and passion. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, a couple in life and on stage, lead a talented ensemble for a celebration that transcends the confines of a tribute. Nothing is "replicated" here: the same free and collective spirit that animated the original Mad Dogs reigns supreme.

On stage, alongside the two leaders, are some of the most iconic names in history: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Chris Stainton. And then a parade of exceptional guests: Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, Dave Mason of Traffic, Warren Haynes, Anders Osborne, Pamela Polland, and John Bell. Closing the circle, in the original 2015 mix, was Leon Russell himself, the great architect of the 1970 tour—almost as if blessing the operation before his passing.

From the first notes of "The Letter," it's clear this isn't just a revival: Susan Tedeschi's voice is a force of nature, and the band moves with the energy of a musical community playing for pure joy. Touching moments follow, like "Darling Be Home Soon" (by John Sebastian, made famous by Cocker) and the stirring "Bird on the Wire," featuring a Rita Coolidge in a state of grace.

Among the moments worth noting: Warren Haynes ignites the audience with The Beatles' "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," while Chris Robinson takes center stage with "Sticks and Stones" and duets with Susan Tedeschi on the stunning "Space Captain." When "Feelin' Alright," "With a Little Help from My Friends," and "The Weight" arrive, it's pure collective catharsis: the audience, the band, the guests—all united in a sonic embrace that exudes gratitude and freedom.

Il testamento della più grande band del southern rock

Un cruccio, tra i tanti concerti a cui avrei anelato d’assistere, sarebbe certamente stato uno della Allman Brothers Band. Ho avuto la possibilità di vedere i suoi due chitarristi più recenti (Warren Haynes e Derek Trucks, anche più volte e m’accontento).

Nondimeno poter ascoltare cos’hanno combinato durante la loro ultima performance è comunque tanta roba.

Se davvero c’è stato un finale degno per una delle avventure più leggendarie del rock americano, è impresso in queste tre ore abbondanti di musica viva e struggente. Il 28 ottobre 2014, per la sesta e ultima sera consecutiva sul palco del Beacon Theatre di New York, la Allman Brothers Band si congedava per sempre dal proprio pubblico. “Final Concert 10-28-14”, pubblicato in digitale già nei mesi scorsi da Peach Records e più di recente in formato fisico, è il testamento sonoro di quell’ultima danza, in uno dei luoghi che più di ogni altro ha accolto il rito laico della band, dal 1989 in poi.

Registrato con audio cristallino, il triplo CD rappresenta una delle testimonianze dal vivo più complete e potenti mai pubblicate dalla ABB, un lascito che ha il sapore della memoria e il peso della storia. Ventinove brani, tre set invece dei consueti due, una maratona che parte con la poesia acustica di Little Martha – omaggio al fratello perduto, Duane – e si chiude con Trouble No More, la prima canzone mai suonata dalla formazione originale. Un cerchio che si chiude. Un addio consapevole, doloroso e bellissimo.

Gregg Allman, pur provato dai problemi di salute, si ritaglia momenti di intensità commovente, specie nella delicata Melissa, dove ogni parola è sospesa tra il respiro e l’addio. La voce è meno potente, ma più autentica, scavata dalla vita e restituita con la dignità di chi ha attraversato l'inferno e ne è uscito per dire grazie. Intorno a lui, un ensemble affiatatissimo: Warren Haynes e Derek Trucks costruiscono architetture chitarristiche da brividi, mai autoindulgenti, sempre capaci di parlare l’uno con l’altro, proiettando la lezione di Duane e Dickey Betts in una dimensione attuale e vibrante. Il basso pulsante di Oteil Burbridge, il doppio drumming serrato di Butch Trucks e Jaimoe, le percussioni vulcaniche di Marc Quinones completano il mosaico di una band che, pur acciaccata, è ancora all’apice.

Le scalette della ABB sono sempre state una dichiarazione d’intenti, ma qui si va oltre: classici come Statesboro Blues, Midnight Rider, Dreams, Blue Sky e Whipping Post convivono con un’incredibile Mountain Jam divisa in tre parti, e jam visionarie come la chilometrica In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, attraversata da una lunga parentesi tribale (JaMaBuBu) e da venature jazz che rendono il brano un viaggio ipnotico. Non mancano le cover reinterpretate con la solita verve: Good Morning Little School Girl e The Sky Is Crying sono rivitalizzate da impasti sonori robusti, che onorano le radici del blues senza mai suonare stanche.

Questo concerto, già uscito in passato solo attraverso il canale di merchandising ufficiale, torna ora in una riedizione celebrativa a dieci anni dall’evento, con booklet di 16 pagine, foto esclusive e le note che ripercorrono quel periodo turbolento, culminato in una delle performance più significative della carriera della band. La magia è tutta lì: in quel saluto finale, nel discorso stanco ma fiero di Gregg Allman (“Non avevo idea che si potesse arrivare a questo”), nel Beacon gremito, in una comunità musicale che non si è mai arresa ai drammi, alle separazioni, ai lutti. È il suono di un addio che non conosce rimpianto, ma solo riconoscenza.

Final Concert 10-28-14 è uno di quei dischi che ogni appassionato di rock, blues, southern dovrebbe ascoltare almeno una volta. Perché dentro ci sono la gloria e la fatica di una strada lunga 45 anni. Perché è un’opera totale. Perché, insieme a Live at Fillmore East, rappresenta l’essenza più pura e travolgente della Allman Brothers Band. Una messa laica per strumenti e cuori pulsanti. Un lascito. Un’eredità.
