E' stato pubblicato ieri da Fantasy Records Future Soul, sesto album in studio della Tedeschi Trucks Band, dopo che a settembre scorso era uscito Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (Live At Lockn'). A quattro anni dal monumentale I Am the Moon — progetto ambizioso e stratificato, diviso in quattro capitoli — il collettivo che vede alla guida Susan Tedeschi e Derek Trucks cambia prospettiva. Mentre il lavoro precedente era introspettivo, quasi spirituale, il nuovo capitolo è dichiaratamente estroverso, diretto, costruito per comunicare subito. Un album dal suono più compatto, più rifinito, e soprattutto dove trova minor spazio la tendenza alla divagazione strumentale; più canzoni nel senso classico del termine. Non per questo è doveroso parlare di svolta commerciale, tutt'altro. E' semplicemente cambiato l'approccio alla scrittura dei brani, più brevi e diretti, senza fronzoli. L’apertura con Crazy Cryin’ chiarisce subito l’intento: riff azzeccato, funky e fiati in evidenza e la voce di Susan Tedeschi, che pare continui a migliorare ed uno strigato solo di Derek Trucks. Si prosegue con i due brani scelti come singoli (I Got You e Who Am I); gradevole e solare il primo a firma del cantante Mike Mattison mentre il secondo è più intimo e riflessivo e mette ancora in luce l'ugola di Susan Tedeschi. La successiva Hero è tra i momenti più interessanti del disco, con un ritmo che cresce progressivamente e, a rischio di sembrar noioso, con un'altra grande prova di Susan Tedeschi. Si torna ad un'atmosfera soffusa con la breve What in the World, sospesa e malinconica; poi arriva la title track Future Soul  ed il tiro si rialza con il rock che arriva possente e la chitarra a dettare legge; altro ottimo brano. In Under the Knife è Mike Mattison impegnato alla voce; si va verso un rock più manieristico dove spicca l'ottimo l'arrangiamento dei fiati; Be Kind non è male ma niente pù, forse la traccia più normale o la meno azzeccata, da qualunque parte la si analizzi. Il blues si riaffaccia in Devil Be Gone con un bell'assolo di Trucks che l'impreziosice,  e ci si avvia al finale dell'album. Gli ultimi due brani sono legati da un senso di relativa tranquilità:  Shout Out, quasi drammatica con le sue sfumature corali ed il breve gioiellino di Ride On, che chiude il disco con le note della chitarra, e modo migliore poteva non esserci. Chi cerca le lunghe jam e le improvvisazioni non le troverà forse qui, ma potrà sbizzarrirsi nell'apprezzarli in concerto. La band è forse entrata in una fase più accessibile, ma lo ha fatto senza tradire la propria anima. E se il futuro avrà ancora un'anima c'è quindi soltanto da augurarsi un nuovo tour europeo e magari italiano (dopo l'ultimo nel 2019); c'è voglia di tornare ad ascoltare questi alfieri del rock d'oltre oceano.

It was released yesterday by Fantasy Records Future Soul, the sixth studio album by the Tedeschi Trucks Band, after Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (Live At Lockn') was released last September. Four years after the monumental I Am the Moon — an ambitious and layered project, divided into four chapters — the collective led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks is changing its perspective. While the previous work was introspective, almost spiritual, the new chapter is avowedly extroverted, direct, built to communicate immediately. An album with a more compact, more refined sound, and above all where the tendency towards instrumental digression finds less space; more songs in the classical sense of the term. That does not mean that we have to talk about a commercial breakthrough, far from it. The approach to writing songs has simply changed, shorter and more direct, without frills. The opening with Crazy Cryin’ immediately clarifies the intent: a well-chosen riff, funky and prominent horns and the voice of Susan Tedeschi, who seems to continue to improve and a strigato solo by Derek Trucks. We continue with the two songs chosen as singles (I Got You and Who Am I); the first, written by singer Mike Mattison, is pleasant and sunny, while the second is more intimate and thoughtful and once again highlights Susan Tedeschi's uvula. The following Hero is among the most interesting moments of the album, with a progressively increasing pace and, at the risk of sounding boring, with another great performance by Susan Tedeschi. The song returns to a subdued atmosphere with the brief, suspended, and melancholic What in the World. Then comes the title track, Future Soul, and the shot rises again with the rock coming in powerfully and the guitar dictating the way; another excellent song. On Under the Knife, Mike Mattison takes over the vocals; the move is toward a more manneristic rock style, where the excellent horn arrangement stands out; Be Kind isn't bad, but it's nothing more, perhaps the most normal or the least fitting track, no matter where you analyze it. The blues resurfaces on Devil Be Gone with a beautiful solo by Trucks that embellishes it, and we get to the end of the album. The last two songs are linked by a sense of relative tranquility: Shout Out, almost dramatic with its choral nuances and the short gem of Ride On, which closes the album with the notes of the guitar, and there could have been no better way. Those looking for long jams and improvisations may not find them here, but they can indulge in appreciating them in concert. The band may have entered a more accessible phase, but they did so without betraying their soul. And if the future still has a soul, we can only hope for a new European tour, perhaps an Italian one (after the last one in 2019); we want to get back to listening to these champions of overseas rock.

Con oltre vent’anni di militanza nella Tedeschi Trucks Band e nella Derek Trucks Band, il cantante e chitarrista Mike Mattison è una figura ben nota nel panorama blues contemporaneo. Vincitore del Minnesota Grammy Award, l’artista torna ora con il suo terzo lavoro solista, Turn a midnight corner, disco che unisce energia roots e narrazione concettuale. L’album immagina la storia di Ted ‘n’ Turk, un duo blues rurale fittizio degli anni ’30 “riscoperto” negli anni Settanta e riunito per reincidere i vecchi brani pubblicati originariamente su 78 giri. Quella che dovrebbe essere una celebrazione tardiva del loro passato si trasforma però in qualcosa di più ambiguo: rivalità, denaro, ambizioni e vecchi rancori finiscono per contaminare il ritorno sulle scene. Prodotto dallo stesso Mattison insieme a Jason Kingsland, il disco presenta dodici brani. Mattison guida il progetto alla voce e alla chitarra acustica, affiancato da una band che per l’occasione prende il nome di Trash Magic formata dai chitarristi Dave Yoke e Greg Spradlin; dal batterista Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell e dal bassista  tastierista Wesley Flowers. Tra i brani l’apertura con Going Down the Alley è immediatamente trascinante. Il brano avanza con un ritmo stomp che mescola country-western e blues elettrico. L’energia prosegue con And I’m Gone, che corre su un groove nervoso a metà strada tra l’irruenza dei The Blasters e il boogie ruvido degli ZZ Top. When I Was Loaded procede con un groove lento e denso, dove le chitarre si rincorrono sopra una base ritmica compatta, ricordando l’atmosfera dei The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Altro momento convincente è Homesick Lullaby, dove la voce assume una tinta malinconica e narrativa. Ed ancora tra gli episodi più riusciti c’è anche Be Like a Train, brano dal passo inarrestabile che sembra correre sui binari del roots americano, evocando atmosfere care alla tradizione folk-blues. Le chitarre incendiano il brano con fraseggi ruvidi mentre la ritmica resta solida e pulsante. Il lato più diretto e rock emerge invece in Lookee Here, garage-blues sporco ed immediato. Nel finale troviamo l'energica Sore Losers e la ballata acustica Wait for Lola, più intima e quasi da front porch americana. Turn a midnight corner è un lavoro che vive soprattutto della sua energia: groove solidi, chitarre taglienti ed una band che suona con grande coesione; un disco blues-rock vigoroso e sincero, capace di mescolare tradizione e modernità con naturalezza.

Alcuni dischi non si limitano a suonare ma riaccendono un ricordo collettivo, fanno rivivere un’energia che pensavamo perduta. È il caso di Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’), il nuovo live della Tedeschi Trucks Band che rende omaggio, a più di cinquant’anni di distanza, al leggendario tour di Joe Cocker e LeonRussell.

Registrato nel 2015 al LOCKN’ Festival in Virginia, e finalmente pubblicato (nel mese di settembre), da Fantasy Records, questo concerto è un’esplosione di musica e passione. Derek Trucks e SusanTedeschi, coppia nella vita e sul palco, guidano un ensemble di talenti per una celebrazione che travalica i confini del tributo. Qui non si “replica” nulla: si respira lo stesso spirito libero e collettivo che animava i Mad Dogs originali.

Sul palco, insieme ai due leader, compaiono alcuni nomi che hanno fatto la storia: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Chris Stainton. E poi una sfilata di ospiti d’eccezione: Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Robinson dei Black Crowes, Dave Mason dei Traffic, Warren Haynes, Anders Osborne, Pamela Polland, John Bell. A chiudere il cerchio, nel mix originale del 2015, c’era Leon Russell stesso, il grande architetto del tour del ’70 — quasi a voler benedire l’operazione prima di andarsene.

Fin dalle prime note di “The Letter”, è chiaro che non si tratta di un semplice revival: la voce di Susan Tedeschi è una forza della natura, e la band si muove con l’energia di una comunità musicale che suona per pura gioia. Seguono momenti toccanti come “Darling Be Home Soon” (di John Sebastian, resa celebre da Cocker) e l’emozionante “Bird on the Wire”, con una Rita Coolidge in stato di grazia.

Tra i momenti da segnare in rosso: Warren Haynes infiamma la platea con “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” dei Beatles, mentre Chris Robinson si prende la scena in “Sticks and Stones” e duetta con Susan Tedeschi in una strepitosa “Space Captain”. Quando arrivano “Feelin’ Alright”, “With a Little Help from My Friends” e “The Weight”, è pura catarsi collettiva: il pubblico, la band, gli ospiti — tutti uniti in un abbraccio sonoro che sa di gratitudine e libertà.

Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited è più di un disco live: è un atto d’amore verso la musica che unisce, un ponte tra generazioni e un promemoria del potere che ha la condivisione sul palco. Derek Trucks e Susan Tedeschi non si limitano a guardare indietro — portano avanti una tradizione di onestà musicale, con il cuore sempre acceso.

Un album da ascoltare a volume alto, preferibilmente con gli amici, ricordando che la vera magia del rock è fatta di comunità e passione.

Some records don't just play music, they rekindle a collective memory, reviving an energy we thought was lost. This is the case with Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN'),the new live album by the Tedeschi Trucks Band, which pays tribute, more than fifty years later,to the legendary Joe Cocker and Leon Russell tour.

Recorded in 2015 at the LOCKN' Festival in Virginia, and finally released (in September) by Fantasy Records, this concert is an explosion of music and passion. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, a couple in life and on stage, lead a talented ensemble for a celebration that transcends the confines of a tribute. Nothing is "replicated" here: the same free and collective spirit that animated the original Mad Dogs reigns supreme.

On stage, alongside the two leaders, are some of the most iconic names in history: Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Chris Stainton. Closing the circle, in the original 2015 mix, was Leon Russell himself, the great architect of the 1970 tour—almost as if blessing the operation before his passing.

From the first notes of "The Letter," it's clear this isn't just a revival: Susan Tedeschi's voice is a force of nature, and the band moves with the energy of a musical community playing for pure joy.
