Non ricordavo sinceramente dell'esistenza del formato “split”, che diverso tempo fa pare abbia rappresentato  una piccola gemma per appassionati e collezionisti: più band, brani inediti ed un fascino underground che ancora oggi mantiene intatta tutta la sua magia. E dunque ecco qui questo salto all'indietro con Voci Notturne, che grazie alla Black Widow Records, label genovese da sempre attenta al progressive più oscuro e al doom dalle atmosfere evocative, riunisce in questo progetto due realtà importanti della propria scuderia: ExpiatoriA e Il Segno del Comando. Il risultato è un album ispirato alla miniserie televisiva Voci Notturne, opera del 1995 firmata da Pupi Avati che nel tempo è diventata un piccolo cult del mistero italiano. Il disco contiene sette tracce – tre degli ExpiatoriA e quattro de Il Segno del Comando – per circa quarantacinque minuti di musica, registrati tra il 2023 e il 2025 presso gli Evilcation Studios con Edoardo Napoli (che ha curato anche mix e mastering). E' uscito in digitale sulla piattaforma Bandcamp nel mese di marzo ed in  formato fisico, con CD e vinile, quest’ultimo stampato inizialmente in sole cento copie. Aprono il lavoro gli ExpiatoriA, formazione prog doom epic metal composta da AngeleX alla voce, Massimo Malachina e Roberto Lucanato  alla chitarra, Giambattista Malachina al basso ed Enrico Meloni alla batteria. Emily introduce immediatamente l’ascoltatore nelle atmosfere della serie grazie al narrato originale del telefilm. Il brano procede con passo solenne e pesante ed il doom emerge in tutta la sua intensità. Il cantato di AngeleX è intenso e quasi teatrale, mentre i riff granitici si intrecciano con una sezione ritmica dinamica e con un assolo di chitarra dal gusto decisamente ottantiano. Con Sublicius la band conferma il proprio ottimo stato di forma, evocando atmosfere che rimandano ai maestri del doom epico come i Candlemass. Il brano assume quasi un carattere liturgico e solenne. A chiudere il lotto dei pezzi degli ExpiatoriA arriva La Canzone di Lady Valover, episodio più riflessivo costruito su arpeggi suggestivi ed un cantato più controllato, che conduce a un finale strumentale molto efficace. La seconda parte dello split è affidata a Il Segno del Comando, storica formazione progressive guidata dal bassista Diego Banchero; ritroviamo Roberto Lucanato alla chitarra, Riccardo Morello alla voce, Davide Bruzzi a chitarra e tastiere, Beppi Menozzi alle tastiere e Paolo Serboli alla batteria. Con Le Due Vie il sound si sposta verso un progressive metal oscuro e ricercato, con strutture articolate e melodie arricchite dall’uso dei sintetizzatori. Il Crittogramma aumenta l’intensità sonora e mette in evidenza il lato più narrativo della band. Il cantato di Morello, con alcune sfumature che richiamano certa new wave anni Ottanta, accompagna un brano ricco di dettagli ed atmosfere. Segue Litania per Emily e Giacomo, il momento più intimo del disco, dove chitarre acustiche ed elettriche dialogano creando un clima sospeso e suggestivo. La chiusura è affidata alla strumentale Egregoro, che fonde progressive metal e suggestioni neo prog, chiudendo l’album con eleganza. Voci Notturne è uno split riuscito, che rende omaggio alla serie di Avati mantenendo al tempo stesso una forte identità musicale. Le due band interpretano lo stesso immaginario oscuro da prospettive diverse ma complementari, creando un lavoro coerente ed affascinante per gli amanti del prog e delle atmosfere più misteriose.

I honestly didn't remember the existence of the "split" format, which some time ago seemed to have represented a little gem for enthusiasts and collectors: multiple bands, unreleased tracks, and an underground charm that still retains all its magic today. And so here is this leap back with Voci Notturne, which, thanks to Black Widow Records, a Genoese label that has always been attentive to the darkest progressive and atmospherically evocative doom, brings together in this project two important entities from its stable: ExpiatoriA and Il Segno del Comando. The result is an album inspired by the television miniseries Voci Notturne, a 1995 work by Pupi Avati that over time has become a small cult of Italian mystery. The album contains seven tracks – three by ExpiatoriA and four by Il Segno del Comando – for about forty-five minutes of music, recorded between 2023 and 2025 at Evilcation Studios with Edoardo Napoli (who also handled the mix and mastering). It was released digitally on the Bandcamp platform in March and in physical format, on CD and vinyl, the latter initially printed in only one hundred copies. The album opens with ExpiatoriA, a prog doom epic metal band composed of AngeleX on vocals, Massimo Malachina and Roberto Lucanato on guitar, Giambattista Malachina on bass and Enrico Meloni on drums. Emily immediately introduces the listener to the atmosphere of the series thanks to the original narration of the TV series. The song proceeds with a solemn and heavy step and the doom emerges in all its intensity. AngeleX's singing is intense and almost theatrical, while the granite riffs intertwine with a dynamic rhythm section and a guitar solo with a decidedly eighties flavour.With Sublicius, the band confirms its excellent form, evoking atmospheres reminiscent of epic doom masters like Candlemass. The song takes on an almost liturgical and solemn character. Closing out the batch of ExpiatoriA tracks is La Canzone di Lady Valover, a more reflective piece built on evocative arpeggios and more controlled vocals, leading to a highly effective instrumental finale. The second part of the split is entrusted to Il Segno del Comando, a historic progressive band led by bassist Diego Banchero; we find Roberto Lucanato on guitar, Riccardo Morello on vocals, Davide Bruzzi on guitar and keyboards, Beppi Menozzi on keyboards, and Paolo Serboli on drums. With Le Due Vie, the sound shifts toward a dark and refined progressive metal, with complex structures and melodies enriched by the use of synthesizers. Il Crittogramma increases the sonic intensity and highlights the band's more narrative side. Morello's vocals, with nuances reminiscent of 1980s new wave, accompany a song rich in detail and atmosphere. This is followed by "Litania per Emily e Giacomo," the album's most intimate moment, where acoustic and electric guitars interact, creating a suspended and evocative atmosphere. The closing track is the instrumental "Egregoro," which blends progressive metal and neo-prog influences, elegantly closing the album. "Voci Notturne" is a successful split, paying homage to Avati's series while maintaining a strong musical identity. The two bands interpret the same dark imagery from different yet complementary perspectives, creating a coherent and fascinating work for lovers of prog and more mysterious atmospheres.
