L’esordio di una cantante, specie in ambito jazzistico, è un passo importante, sempre. My Jazz Identity di Perla Palmieri, pubblicato dall'etichetta Notami, mostra una precisa consapevolezza artistica: un lavoro intenso, elegante e profondamente personale, costruito con pazienza attraverso anni di studio, ascolto, ricerca vocale ed esplorazione musicale. Il titolo dell’album non lascia spazio a equivoci. L’identità evocata dalla giovane artista marchigiana non è soltanto una dichiarazione stilistica, ma diventa il cuore stesso del progetto. In questi 57 minuti di musica emerge infatti una forte coerenza espressiva: ogni interpretazione, ogni arrangiamento ed ogni scelta sonora sembrano convergere verso un’unica esigenza, quella di raccontarsi sinceramente attraverso il jazz. Non sorprende quindi che il progetto abbia ottenuto il prestigioso Pathway To Jazz Award 2025, importante riconoscimento americano promosso dall’omonima organizzazione del Colorado, che ne sostiene anche la pubblicazione. Un premio che conferma il valore internazionale di un lavoro capace di unire tradizione jazzistica e sensibilità contemporanea. L’aspetto più interessante del disco è forse proprio questo equilibrio tra rispetto della tradizione e ricerca personale. Perla Palmieri non si limita ad interpretare il repertorio jazzistico: lo attraversa con una voce riconoscibile, mai manieristica, capace di muoversi con naturalezza tra eleganza tecnica ed intensità emotiva. Emblematico, in questo senso, il remake di Fascinating Rhythm, classico scritto nel 1924 da George Gershwin con testi di Ira Gershwin. La rilettura della Palmieri evita ogni esercizio nostalgico e restituisce invece freschezza al brano, grazie ad un’interpretazione misurata ma ricca di personalità. La cantante lascia inoltre spazio ai musicisti che la accompagnano, creando un dialogo autentico che evidenzia la sintonia maturata durante il lavoro in studio. Al Miriam Recording Studio di Roma, dove l’album ha preso forma, insieme a Perla Palmieri, troviamo infatti lo special gusti assoluto valore Max Ionata al sax tenore, Simone Bortolani alla chitarra, Giuseppe Dato al pianoforte, Alberto Zuanon al contrabbasso e Max Verrillo alla batteria: un ensemble compatto e sensibile, capace di sostenere con equilibrio tanto i momenti più intimi quanto quelli maggiormente dinamici. Tra i brani più significativi emerge sicuramente Maiolica, composizione originale che rappresenta forse il punto più personale dell’intero disco. Qui la scrittura della Palmieri riesce a trasformare immagini, appartenenza territoriale ed emozioni in una narrazione musicale intensa e cinematografica. Il titolo richiama immediatamente la tradizione artigianale marchigiana e sembra quasi suggerire un parallelismo tra il lavoro dell’artigiano e quello del musicista: entrambi modellano materia grezza trasformandola in espressione identitaria. Ed è proprio il concetto di identità a diventare il filo conduttore dell’intero album. Non come semplice autoaffermazione, ma come ricerca di autenticità. In questo senso il jazz di Perla Palmieri appare profondamente vissuto, quasi necessario. Una musica che non punta all’effetto immediato, ma che conquista progressivamente grazie alla cura degli arrangiamenti, alla qualità interpretativa e alla sincerità emotiva che attraversa tutto il progetto. Dopo i riconoscimenti ottenuti negli ultimi anni — dal Premio del Pubblico al Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani 2023 fino al Premio del Pubblico al Premio Nazionale Chicco Bettinardi — My Jazz Identity sembra rappresentare per Perla Palmieri non un punto di arrivo, ma soprattutto l’inizio di un percorso artistico già sorprendentemente maturo e riconoscibile.

A singer's debut, especially in the jazz field, is always an
important step. Perla Palmieri's My Jazz Identity, published by the Notami label, demonstrates a
precise artistic awareness: an intense, elegant, and deeply personal
work, patiently constructed through years of study, listening, vocal
research, and musical exploration. The album's title leaves no room
for ambiguity. The identity evoked by the young artist from the
Marche region is not merely a stylistic statement, but becomes the
very heart of the project. Indeed, throughout these 57 minutes of
music, a strong expressive coherence emerges: every interpretation,
every arrangement, and every sonic choice seem to converge toward a
single purpose: to sincerely express oneself through jazz. It's
therefore not surprising that the project has won the prestigious
Pathway To Jazz Award 2025, an important American recognition
promoted by the Colorado-based organization of the same name, which
also supports its release. This award confirms the international
standing of a work capable of uniting jazz tradition and contemporary
sensibility. The most interesting aspect of the album is perhaps
precisely this balance between respect for tradition and personal
exploration. Perla Palmieri doesn't limit herself to interpreting the
jazz repertoire: she traverses it with a distinctive, never mannered
voice, capable of moving effortlessly between technical elegance and
emotional intensity. Her remake of Fascinating Rhythm, a classic
written in 1924 by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, is
emblematic of this. Palmieri's reinterpretation avoids any nostalgic
exercise and instead restores the piece's freshness, thanks to a
measured yet personality-rich interpretation. The singer also gives space to the musicians accompanying her,
creating an authentic dialogue that highlights the harmony developed
during studio work. At Miriam Recording Studio, where the album took
shape, alongside Perla Palmieri, we find the special gusti assoluto
valore: Max Ionata on tenor sax, Simone Bortolani on guitar, Giuseppe
Dato on piano, Alberto Zuanon on double bass, and Max Verrillo on
drums: a compact and sensitive ensemble, capable of sustaining both
the most intimate and the most dynamic moments with balance. Among
the most significant tracks, Maiolica certainly stands out, an
original composition that represents perhaps the most personal point
of the entire album. Here, Palmieri's writing manages to transform
images, territorial belonging, and emotions into an intense and
cinematic musical narrative. The title immediately recalls the Marche
artisan tradition and almost seems to suggest a parallel between the
work of the artisan and that of the musician: both shape raw

a search for authenticity. In this sense, Perla Palmieri's jazz
appears deeply experienced, almost necessary. Her music doesn't aim
for immediate impact, but gradually wins over thanks to the careful
arrangements, the interpretive quality, and the emotional sincerity
that runs through the entire project. After the accolades received in
recent years—from the Audience Award at the 2023 Massimo Urbani
International Prize to the Audience Award at the Chicco Bettinardi
National Prize—My Jazz Identity seems to represent for Perla
Palmieri not a point of arrival, but above all the beginning of an
already surprisingly mature and recognizable artistic journey.
